Azeri Refugee Beaten in Moscow

(December 4, 2008)

An Azeri refugee was attacked in Moscow by three masked men, according to a December 3, 2008 report by the Sova Information-Analytical Center. Atakhan Abilov is one of a relatively small number of de facto refugees who has received refugee status from the Russian government. In addition, the UNHCR granted him status allowing him to leave Russia for a third country (perhaps because of the threat of racist violence), but he stuck around to wait for his family to get out of Azerbaijan. The attack took place on November 30; Mr. Abilov was subsequently hospitalized with a concussion and a broken nose.
